Isla Vista Governmental Entities

governing_entities01As an unincorporated district and census-designated place, Isla Vista has little direct  governance, and instead garners most of its resources through the county of Santa  Barbara. At one time, the city of Goleta was also an unincorporated district, but it gained city status within the county in 2002.

Today, Isla Vista is governed primarily by the office of the Third District Supervisor of Santa Barbara, maintained by the Isla Vista Recreation and Parks District, and receives law  enforcement from the Isla Vista Foot Patrol substation of Santa Barbara. Other services and governance are provided by the University of California, Santa Barbara and Santa  Barbara City College, both of which are close neighbors with Isla Vista. Other stakeholders,  property owners, and quasi-governmental entities also comprise Isla Vista’s loose and decentralized governance structure.

governing_entities02There have been three previous attempts to obtain self-governance in Isla Vista through  incorporation into Santa Barbara county. Although these movements gained traction and other smaller movements have been attempted, Isla Vista has never had a centralized  governmental structure to voice its needs and concerns to the county of Santa Barbara.
